The Black Muslim Initiative (BMI) needs your help! BMI is a not-for-profit organization based in Toronto, Canada, that's dedicated to understanding and addressing issue at the intersection of the Black and Muslim experience. So why does BMI need your donations? 

We need your generous donations to help us with the following: 

(1) Hire dedicated full-time staff  

(2) Continue our goal of obtaining a much-needed Community Center and 

(3) Continue our advocacy/research on behalf of the Black Muslim community. 

So who are we? 

We're a group of Black Muslim volunteers from varying backgrounds united by a commitment to following in the footsteps of the Prophet's (pbuh) legacy of addressing social/racial injustice and exclusion both within and outside our community. For the past 3 years, BMI has been mobilizing to bring the community together in order to amplify Black Muslim voices and create space for the needs and concerns of Black Muslims in particular. 

We've hosted community iftars, organized townhalls and lectures with respected scholars and leaders, produced research and participated in direct advocacy work to address policy and legislative issues relating to anti-Black racism and Islamophobia. We've also organized the first ever Black Muslim academic conference in Canada and facilitated the completion of the first comprehensive literature review on publications about Black Muslims.

What's our Approach? ​

BMI believes that to address issues and build community, we must engage with institutions both within and outside the Muslim community. For this reason, we've partnered or engaged with various mosques, schools and universities, civil liberties organizations, government institutions and private foundations to deliver programming or consult. For us, ensuring that Black Muslim voices are never erased in any conversations that concerns both the Black community and the Muslim community has been our overriding goal.  

Of course, doing this work is not easy. We are comprised entirely of volunteers who sacrifice their own time and resources to the cause of this work. And like many not-for-profits, our challenges revolve around questions of long-term sustainability. That's why BMI has partnered with LaunchGood on this Black History Month campaign in hopes of raising much-needed funds to continue this work. For us, we understand that for the Muslim community to be at its absolute best, the Black Muslims within our community must feel supported and heard.
