Help get Islamic children's books into public libraries.

What began as a father’s solution to his children's simple yet profound questions about Allah (God), has grown into a sensational Islamic children's book series with characters that are inspiring both kids and adults!

Ilyas & Duck storybooks combine relatable characters, beautiful illustrations, heartfelt stories, and the right touch of humor to create a reading experience like no other for young Muslim kids.

Parents and teachers have shared stories about how Ilyas & Duck have made such an impact on their kids. And how the characters and their stories have helped affirm their Muslim identity.

The books have even cracked into the mainstream!  "Ilyas & Duck Search for Allah" won the American Moonbeam Children's Book Award; a nationally recognized honor.

Our goal through this campaign is to send Ilyas & Duck books to 5,000 public libraries across America!

Why? Because kids see themselves through books.  Because books are able to harness the power of storytelling to communicate thoughts, ideas and cultures in engaging ways.  And when these stories include Muslim characters and are made accessible in public places, they help represent our children's unique Muslim identity.  In this way our kids feel validated and included. And that's empowering.

Just think how excited we adults get when a large company, like Google, includes Muslims in its ad. That's the kind of impact and feeling we need to establish for our kids.  That's what this campaign is about.

Yes!  We already began this campaign with libraries in Virginia. After checking the catalog, it was awesome to see that the books were consistently checked out!

Since public libraries are easily accessible to people of all backgrounds, this means that Muslims and non-muslims are reading the books!  So it's clear to see how this campaign has tremendous potential.

Imagine the feeling for a young Muslim child when they walk into their local public library and see characters that can represent them.  When their school friends and neighbors can read about, understand, and appreciate your child's Muslim identity.  How empowering would that be for our children?  This goal is possible.  So let's work together.

For this campaign to be successful, I’m asking you to contribute what you can towards our funding goal.  To make it fun, we've carved the map of the U.S. into 10 regions/communities that we'll be tracking to see which community is contributing the most toward our goal.  We'll share the results with you so you can see exactly where your community ranks in its support of this important campaign.

Where will your community rank?  Let the competition begin!

If we exceed our funding goal, we'll have a chance to stretch the impact we can make on young Muslim kids and take Islamic learning to a whole new level.  The more support we get, the higher Ilyas & Duck can climb the mountain, and the more we'll be able to create awesome new content for your kids to enjoy.

Here's what's possible if we work together.   Just imagine...

  • More storybooks, more frequently!
  • Fun new online Islamic learning experience
  • Highly Interactive games & apps
  • Amazing YouTube animation series
  • Cuddly plush play pals
  • Traveling puppet shows
  • ...and lots more!
But this is only possible if we exceed our funding goal. If we don't reach our funding goal, all your contributions will be used entirely to support the library initiative.

You may donate any amount you like or choose a contribution level based on many awesome rewards.  Either way you're sure to get a warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with making a difference for thousands of young Muslim kids.  To help you choose a reward level, we've summarized them in a neat graphic below.

Here's an account of how we're going to allocate all your contributions to this campaign.  Each amount represents the cost to execute that item.  Stack the costs and the total amount required increases. Note that the stretch goals begin once the campaign goal of $85,000 is reached.

Update #1

Salaams supporters!

Last July, we launched a campaign to send Ilyas & Duck storybooks to public libraries across America.  You understood the importance of making these books with Muslim characters easily accessible to all. You understood how these books, with our shared Muslim values of compassion and respect for others, would help build bridges across cultures - how they would give our young Muslim children a much needed voice.  You understood and you supported. And for that, I Thank You.

This update on the July campaign has been long overdue. In fact, I drafted and sent an update a couple of months ago but apparently no one received it due to an apparent glitch in the LaunchGood system.  I hope this message is well received and finds you in the best of health.  Please find the campaign and rewards update below.

Public Library Donations
Through your support we were able to collect enough funds to donate a set of books to 450 public libraries. That's approximately 900 books!  However, the task of actually getting these books on to library shelves has proven to be more difficult than expected. Because public libraries receive thousands of donations a year, it's impossible to catalog them all due to limited shelf space and so many of these books get discarded.  Since my goal isn't to simply donate but to get them on the shelves so people may actually benefit, donating these books requires a lot more manual effort.  I posted about this manual effort on Facebook and many fans have gotten involved to do what they can. You can read the post here where I give specific instructions on how people can help.  You can also track our progress on this map.  Please contact me if you are able to help. No additional money is requested. Just your time.

Rewards Update
For everyone who chose one of the reward levels, I'm excited to say that we will start sending out the rewards this Ramadan iA alongside the release of Ilyas & Duck book #3 and the limited edition 3-book gift set!   Many of the reward level included the third book so it's taken some time to get that all sorted out. I thank you for your tremendous patience during this time. For those who supported at one of the plush dolls levels please note that we have started developing them but they take a tremendous amount of time and resources and require more time to execute. At this moment I estimate they will be available late 2016.

That's it for now.  There are a lot of exciting things happening with Ilyas & Duck that I hope to be able to share with you over time. In the meantime, if you haven't already, please follow our journey to make a difference in the lives of young kids like yours all over the world by following Ilyas & Duck on Facebook and Instagram.  Until next time...

We did it!

Hello and Salaams!  I hope you're having a wonderful Ramadan.  Ahumdullilah I'm thrilled to report that your support we were able to raise $20,206 for our #5000libraries campaign!

While the amount raised is not quite our original goal of $85,000, it will nevertheless a great accomplishment that will enable us to make a sizable impact in many communities.  Soon, Muslim kids will see themselves represented on bookshelves of libraries all across America - right alongside books that represent their friends and neighbors. Soon anyone with a library card will have access to Ilyas & Duck books that show, in a clear and unadulterated way, how Islam teaches compassion and respect for people of all backgrounds. That's powerful!

In the coming weeks I will be calculating the donations to libraries, distribution of rewards, and compiling a list of libraries to which we will donate.  To the extent possible, I will leverage the zip code of the donors to identify the recipient libraries and share the final list with you.  I understand some of you may have taken the initiative to donate to libraries first hand, aH!  I would love to hear about your experience.  I know that the Cleveland Muslim Community will be very busy delivering books first hand after raising approx. $1200 for the campaign. How exciting!

As for the rewards, they will be sent out as they are developed.  For example, the downloadable coloring page and button pin will be available much sooner than the book # 3 and plush dolls which will take longer to develop  I will also be contacting you as appropriate to get more information for specific rewards (eg. caracture drawing).  InshAllah I will keep you updated on the progress as I try to administer all this while maintaining my sanity and day job, lol :)

Thank you again for support and commitment to the future of our kids.  Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Humbly yours,

Omar S. Khawaja
