Working together to feed our neighbors affected by COVID-19

Donate to Feed Our Neighbors

Last May, AMAC helped launch a food distribution program that has helped over 6000 families in the Antioch area of Nashville who have been hit hard by COVID-19.  We have funded the program through donations and grants, but need your help to continue the program in 2021!

How It All Started

Our communities in Nashville, Tennessee took a direct hit with COVID-19. With the mosques closed, many community member could not access the shared meals at the break of the fast that mosques normally had. So on May 15, AMAC partnered with the Islamic Center of Tennessee (ICT) and the Yemeni American Merchant Association to begin our first food distribution at ICT with 250 boxes of food. It was so successful, that we continued the program through the last two Friday in May, distributing a total of 1500 boxes of food. The families that benefited from the program were from diverse ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds and had suffered financial loss due to COVID-19. All the costs for the food distribution were covered by donations from our partners and community members.

Program Continues Through the Summer

In June, AMAC received grant from the United Way COVID-19 Response Fund to continue the food distribution program we started in May. Since June, we have distributed 4,500 boxes of food and packages of bottled water. The boxes included items such as rice, beans, cereal, juice, apples, potatoes, peanut butter, jelly and more. Although we have nearly exhausted our funds, we want to continue the program at least once a month to help our neighbors suffering from food insecurity amidst this pandemic.

More Than Just Food

Alongside the food boxes, we were able to give out free masks (disposables and reusable) to families as well as information on financial resources and COVID-19 safety tips. We also partnered with the Metro Nashville Public Health Department to conduct free covid testing alongside the food distribution at ICT, which was located in a covid hotspot.
