As refugees, the parents of our school children are often unable to pay the monthly tuition. Together, we can bring education to our Somali refugee children.

We all have a right to education… but only through your help will most have the ability to exercise this right.

The Somali Refugee Community (SRC) School calls on your support to further access to education for our refugee children. We currently have 115 students (mainly Somali, but we extend our services to our brothers and sisters in need including 13 Yemini, 1 Sri Lankan, 1 Bangladeshi and 1 Indian). Our first campaign target, of 30,000RM (or 7,148 USD), will fund 50 refugee children (for 1 year) and allow them to build a better and brighter future for themselves and their families, starting with education.

As refugees, the parents of our school (most of which are single mothers) are often unable to pay the full monthly tuition fee (50RM/~12 USD). While we try to support our community to the best of our abilities, resource constraints have forced us to turn away some students. It has also forced us to rely on voluntary teachers (who have dedicated their time and energy for the good of our community).

We would like to open our doors to new coming students and  therefore call on the international community to help us bring both better and greater access to education for our children. By donating, you will support much more than education for a refugee child -- you will also ensure that our volunteer teachers will receive an income to support themselves and their livelihood. We believe one of the key strengths of our community school is the commitment of these teachers and the wider community to ensure its success and we hope we can compensate them fairly for their contribution.

About us:

We are a community of 3,000 Somali refugees (mainly children, single mothers and people with disabilities) located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Of these, we support 900 within our area through education and trainings. Our school provides English, Math, Science and Art classes as well as outdoor activities (sports and football competitions).

  • Preschool (20 students)

  • Grade 1 (20 students)

  • Grade 2 (20 students)

  • Grade 3 (10 students)

  • Foundation (15 students)

  • Level 1 (15 students)

  • Level 2 (15 students)

We also pride ourselves on the connection we have with our Somali community -- we have built more than a school and a center, but also a network of support. A great example are our community members, all of which are Somali refugees, and many of which have forgone payment to keep our school alive.

We have struggled, to say the least -- and even had to temporarily close our school (March 2018 - July 2018) due to relocating our center and challenges in securing salaries for our teachers. However, thankfully, our community stood by us and our students returned once school operations restarted.

Malaysian Context:

Restrictive or non existent laws complicate the plight of refugees in Malaysia. We are not formally recognised as refugees, but rather considered ‘illegal migrants’. This makes it unlawful for adults to work and children to attend local Malaysian schools, and it is precisely these circumstances which give the SRC school its importance.

Curriculum:

Our school aspires to follow the Cambridge International Curriculum for Stages from Preschool to Stage 8. Many of the resources donated to the school are associated with this curriculum as it is popular in Malaysia and provides a robust framework for ensuring student success. It also simplifies the process of transferring school upon resettlement. Even through refugee children are not able to sit the official examinations, school in settled countries will be familiar with the Cambridge system and will be better able to place the student in an appropriate class.

Thank you message

Eid Mubarak to everyone!

The students, parents, teachers and committee members of the Somali Refugee School would like to express their immense gratitude for each and every contribution! Thanks to your help, we made this campaign a reality!

Prior to your donations, on average less than 40% of students were able to pay the full monthly tuition fee. This placed a great burden on our teachers, staff and school supply levels.

Today, we are proud to say that each and every child will be a full-paying member.

This past week, the School Committee members came together to ensure that the money will be sustainably spent. Our aim is to use this fund for a full-year (supporting student fees and teacher salaries, and purchasing much needed school supplies).

Given the success of this campaign, our intention is to hold an annual ‘Somali Education’ fundraiser. This way, we can continue to provide a sustainable income for our refugee teachers and quality education for our refugee children.

Once more, thank you for your support!
